House of Lords Expenses Scandal – Does your Company Fall Victim to the Over Claiming Culture?

The Electoral Reform Society has condemned members of the House of Lords for their excessive expense claims, especially given that many of the members make very few, if any contributions throughout the year!

It has come to light that expenses have been claimed summing around £7 million in a one-year period, with these shocking revelations:

·         Around 1 in 7 of these members failed to speak at all, despite claiming more than £1.3m in attendance fees

·         Nearly half of the 798 members made less than 10 contributions in the year

·         £4million was claimed by 277 member who spoke fewer than 5 times

The Electoral Reform campaigners have branded this as the “something-for-nothing culture” and called for action to move away from “couch-potato peers”!

Currently members can claim up to £300 for sitting days, despite making no contribution!

Unfortunately, this practice is a clear example of the developing culture in expense claiming. The process is often abused, and in many cases the abuse of the system is done in innocence, yet the resulting cost to businesses can be crippling.
